Badec Bros Deco mostly uses powder coating as a decorative and durable finish, available in any colour, on our steel decor products.
The powder coating on our trendy steel décor products is SABS approved!
Powder coating is a dry finishing process, using thermoset polymers. Firstly the raw, finished steel product is washed in an acid bath to remove oils and dirt particles from the steel. Secondly, the product is sandblasted, to form miniscule indentations on the steel surface, to enhance the adherence of the powder coating particles to the steel. Thirdly, the product is sprayed with electrostatically charged particles (consisting of pulverized pigment particles and resin) onto the electrically grounded surface. Finally, the product is baked in a curing oven (either conventional or infrared) at 230° Celsius, which melts the thermoset polymer and adheres it to the surface, forming a coat.
The advantages of using powder coating as a finish on our steel decor products are as follow:
1. Rust and scratch resistant
2. Thicker finish than liquid paints, which does not run
3. Environmentally friendly, because less hazardous waste is produced, than with liquid paints, and the overspray can be recycled, which means you get 100% usage
4. There are fewer differences in appearance between horizontally and vertically coated surfaces, than liquid paints
The only disadvantage is that an orange-peel effect can result, if the powder coating is sprayed on to thinly. This can, however, be eliminated by making sure the coating is sprayed on thickly.
